How do you ladies (and fellows) get away from writing about the same old stuff?
I tend to write more when I'm upset or depressed, but I would like to create some lyrics that are more upbeat as well. If I ever did create an album, I wouldn't want people to think my life is crap just because I only write lyrics during certain emotional episodes...

write what's inside of you. If you are like me, you just have to dig a little deeper to find the joy buried below the anger. Never TRY to write about something you have no experience with. it will likely come out sounding fake.
Look at actors... they have to put themselves in someone else's shoes to do their job, but they can do it by relating their character's state of mind/experiences with their own. Songwriting is the same. It all comes back to what you have experienced. The art lies in how you filter that and express it.

I used to write a lot of angsty teen songs. But then I started looking, I mean really paying attention to song lyrics being a form of poetry. My songs are influenced by many poets and songwriters. I think that's the key to good songwriting, look at it as poetry.
