I scan for new stuff to sell and turn the Sonic faithfull onto... well, almost non-stop. It's what I do. Yesterday I ran across several bands that promoted themselves in a similar manner (I always do actually). I'll pick on one here. This was the post on a message forum similar to this one said:
"Call her an insider/outsider artist, but there's nobody (to my knowledge) making albums quite like this in 2005, full of dropped beats, stream-of-consciousness melodies, un-selfconscious lyrics, and ultra-creative-on-a-shoestring-budget arrangements."
I'll leave the band name out of this... but my comment is basically, BULLSH*T. I listened. They had just set themselves up to dissapoint. Not only could I name similar bands, but I could point them to entire web sites that focus on their specific style. It's stupidity, imo. My thoughts on promoting a band are very simple, just say what it is. Remove the fluff. Words, claims, and promises are not going to transform a band into something they're not, and they can backfire on you.
...as long as I'm ranting... web sites. If you're site requires thought to navigate... I'm not interested in ciphering your enigma. Don't hide or disguise your buttons with graphics. You can make a good web site without making it a "flippin' "puzzle.
One more thing that toasts my gibblets... if your band doesn't have a bunch of political songs (ala: Ani DiFranco), keep your politics to yourself. You're alienating at least half of your audience. I don't give a rat's butt wether or not you like George Bush, or Tony Blair. I could care less about how you feel about Hillary Clinton, Christians, or LHPers. If you want to be a political band, BE ONE, if not shut up. Keep your Bio and News sections to just that. The person you're alienating just might just own a cd distro.
...just $ .02 .
I feel better now.
-Peace.
