i was wondering what the most popular technique for bass is right now? Like what "up and coming" (which means popular) bands have awesome bass? And what do you think will hit next? Currently I like to play to some trashy electroclash and a little slap, but i am not good. I like that real bass sound more than the distorted "i wish i were a guitar" way.

Don't talk to me about slap!!!!
God... I won't even play that as a joke.
I have no popular at the moment keeping a close ear on what your drummer is doing is probably a good idea though.
I totally agree with you that distorted bass isn't too hot. I play in a punk band but i still like my bass to sound like err a bass. let the guitarist deal with the noise making thats what i say

I think the next big thing with bass is funk and jazz bass, but then I'm biased because I love those genres so much.
Seriously, my next purchase will be some pedals.

I know this may not be a popular answer, but play everything! I know that the furthest thing from your mind may be Country or Funk, but as a part of the percussion (which you are) you need to know how to play it all. You may not pay Country, but Country licks may come in handy some day. What's new in bass, is you.

Great advice, Joeyangel. I agree.
No matter what your instrument, the more versatile your playing, the better all around musician you'll be.
