I'm a guitarist who wants to record all my own stuff and I want to learn drums to go along with this. I was wondering if drums is really hard to learn and on adverage how long it will take just to learn the basics. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

learning the drums is really easy all you need is some beat just 1-2-3-4 on the bass then add the snare on 2-4 then 8th notes on the hi hat and that is it then just follow your scence of beat

Sure beating on a drum is "easy" but learning it the PROPER way and keeping time does take lessons and practice. I'm a guitar player who started drum lessons a year ago. I learned pretty quickly since I had about 30 years on the guitar behind me but rhythm is VERY different from playing guitar. Plus drum takes MUCH more coordination than guitar. It's a lot of fun though and also great exercise, to boot. I've always had noodly arms but now that I drum I actually have muscle tone - booya!!!

Your right Drummerboy1991, but then again I say if you really want it go for it. What better way to go for it, than learn it the right way! Some people can take lessons and totaly Rock out, but some just cant pull it off. Drumming is one of the many talents that CAN be taught.

i was wrong in what i said. lessions and videos can help a lil. the best way to learn is to keep trying listen to the radio and get a beat in your head try it for a couple of days and you will get it. [and by the way my name is matt friends call me animal]

Danielle:
Yes, you can learn to play drums. How well you learn is another matter. If you have some natural ability and study, take lessons, watch learning videos, practice, you can achieve the ability to play.
I have learned to play most instruments and record my own music. I play all the parts - drums, guitar, keys. It's a great way to work since you don't have to deal with other musicians issues! :-) It does get a bit lonely since it is nice to have others to bounce around ideas. So, a balance between the two is needed sometimes. Be independent so that you don't require others to complete your songs, but then bring them in when you want the collaboration.
Go for it girl ...

PunkRockGurl is correct: Anyone can bang on the drums but not everyone can play with expert technique with in-the-pocket precision. There is inborn talent to consider, but you can learn a lot by studying and taking lessons. I experienced this first hand. My main instrument growing up was keyboards. I played by ear from the time I was 5 years old. I was blessed with a great ear and natural music abilities so I was playing piano proficiently without a lesson. However, when I started studying keyboard technique and learned music theory, my playing ability improved exponentially! I went on to major in music in college and learned to play almost all major instruments -- you cannot even compare where I am now to where I was before I began learning and studying the craft!! If you have natural talent and can play well without formal training, that's great. BUT add lessons and training to that natural ability and you'll become a MONSTER!!! Carter Buford is a natural but he also studied his ass off before he became a world renowned drummer.
