[glow=orange,2,300]Hey! Just a though that came across...when you guys usually learn new beats and strokes and what not, do you teach yourself? Do you think its easier that way? Or do you take lessons? Right now im teaching myself and I think it's pretty easy at times , but then again i dont know if im doing it right.. ?! How could i know if i am?! Any suggesstions? Should I have someone teach me? Thanx![/glow]

Hey!
All I've done so far is to get a drum pad and some sticks and am trying to learn basic beats and rudiments....I'm REALLY new at this. I'm trying to learn guitar and drums (I love them both so much), but I'm actually taking lessons for the guitar now after awhile of trying to teach myself with no luck. If I could find drum lessons around my way, I'd take them too!
I know it probably doesn't answer your question, but I'd be interested in what the more experienced drummers have to say.
Thanks! Fran

[glow=purple,2,300]Hey! Thanx for the in-put. Even though you're a 'new' beginner you said or somethin like that?! Thats cool. Good luck with the whole guitar thing and drum thing. I was just actually wondering what most ppl like to do, or think is best, or if it even matters if you take lessons by a pro or what not?! Well, still, thats a great in-put! Peace out! [/glow]

I can play a little drums although I'm really a bass player (there quite similar in lots of ways though) but when ever i find myself on a drum kit the first thing i want is a metronome to keep me in time and it always helps to get tips from other drummers... They give you insight into playing another beat and you practice and develop on it kind of thing.
Also listening to music you can pick out beats which you thnk are cool and learn them and develop on them
Playing along to music will help you I'm sure but its all obvious stuff really

i have been playing for a while. it started with just music. then i started to try to do the beats it must be in my blood because i rocked from the start. i got i lesson from a friend and the is just 1-2-3-4 on bass 2-4 snare and 1&2&3&4& on the hh thats the basic if you cant do that just put the sticks down so if your brain can to it you can do it with pratice thats all for now hear you on the radio

i've taken plenty of lessons from teachers, and they wasted my time more than anything else. They didn't seem to take me seriously (they were all male), and wanted to make our sessions into flirting sessions instead of teaching me. (Yuck.) Anyway, the best way is to get books on drumming that have accompanying CDs and try to combine looking at the written music as you play with what you hear on the CD (start out simple). Then just listen very carefully to whatever songs you like and pick out the beats, and try to play along as correctly as you can. Go to harder, less obvious beats from there. Don't give up!!! Listening to the songs 24/7 helps, because sometimes your mind picks up little drum parts at other times as you listen, that you didn't notice before.
