Hi everyone,
I just want to know; What made you want to play bass guitar out of all instruments out there? Why not clarinet? Why not drums?
For me it was a split-second decision. There was no pre-thought about why I wanted to play - I just did.
The next day, I wandered down to my local pawn shop and picked up a satisfactory Yamaha bass guitar for about AU $189. Haven't got an amp yet.
I've enrolled in tutoring and I have no background whatsoever in music or musical instruments.
Also, who here likes funk and soul music?
Cheers,
CW

There was no pre-thought about why I wanted to play - I just did. Well Caryn, I can't speak directly for Mia, but I can say that she too sort of threw herself into playing bass guitar!! The band, GRETCHEN, had been through a few bass players in the past.. Some were just temporary fill-ins, and a couple were intended to be permanent.. But when it all came down, Mia stepped up to the plate and simply said one day, "I'll do it!" She has come a long way in her year or so of playing.. I'm extremely proud, and never doubtful of her abilities. (or anyone else in the band for that matter!) Good luck to you in learning to play and I hope that you prosper more than you even expect too!! Official Site of Gretchen!Miaster007// Mia Richards- lead vocals and bass

Also, who here likes funk and soul music? CW Hmm that could be the reason you go the overwhelming urge to pick up a bass -just a thought.

Like alot of Bass Players I was a frustrated guitarist. But when I aquired my first Bass a Sunburst (Fender Jazz Bass), I soon fell in love with it. I thought this is a great instrument...I should have been playin' this thing from the start. Some of my influences at that time were: John Taylor- Duran Duran, Noel Redding- The Jimi Hendrix Experience and Paul McCartney.
Sadly though, I had to eventually sell it. But I did however get back to playing acoustic guitar, cut a CD and get back into gigging. So I guess it all worked out. Sometimes I do miss the Bass though. It's a great instrument.

Now now. Just because someone plays bass, doesn't mean they don't play anything else... I'm assuming your comment Maggis to Cranberries is because your a guitar player as opposed to a bass guitar player? Just wondering

well...I had been playing guitar for many years when I decided to start a band with the drummer of my first band...we traded places and I became the drummer...hime the guitarist....well...after a couple of years of playing with green formica table, I had met these girls who needed a bass player...I listened to one of their songs on garageband.com and fell in love with the venus trap sound...so I got a bass and started playing...it is the perfect medium between guitar and drums...you have rhythm and notes...it is great...

Well my friend was asked by this drummer to be the lead singer in his band and they had a lead guitarist but needed a bassit so I said well hey bass should'nt take that long to learn cause it isn't i started playing bass tabs on my acoustic guitar cause i did'nt have a bass and they sounded great and for most tabs it took me a a few minutes to learn them and then i got a bass and now i can play them really well.If any instrument it easy to play its the bass other people might not agree but I think it is so pick up the bass people.

.If any instrument it easy to play its the bass other people might not agree but I think it is. You are right playing the bass is REALLY easy... Playing it well takes a lot of talent and skill and a fucking good ear. any arsehole can read a bit of tab and think that qualifies them as a bass player what you seem to be missing is that sitting alone in your room picking out root notes on an acoustic guitar doesn't make you a bassist and it never will... It doesn't matter how fast you can play, how complex what you play is; if you can't understand that the bass and the drums are joined at the hip and actually listening to other instruments (not reading tab or "showing off") and being part of the back bone of a song is the key to playing bass Escuse me while I assume you are an idiot and quite possibly a shite "bass player" but the bollox you exude has called for this bluntness.

Everyone starts out shite.
I reckon it's the enthusiasm to learn the correct way (ie reading music instead of tabs) and something other than simple bass lines that makes a good player.
;D

Hey, being able to play the Bass, be it with tab or ear, is a great accomplishment for anyone, let alone a woman. One that can strap on a Bass and play along with a band or a CD, has more talent than most. Many people tell me that they wish that they could just even understand the concept and the coordination that it takes to make music come from any instrument! As we Bass players grow with our instruments we open new doors that this great instrument has to offer...I'll never stop learning new techniques. GOD! I love the Bass!!

I just got a bass for christmas and started lessons mostly because I love the sound And I don't personally know any girls who play the bass. Tell me all you smart bass people out there, is a Fender Squier Affinity P-bass a good bass?
